Our client is a family-owned company founded on the premise of offering superior customer service since its inception in the early 1900’s. Headquartered in Mechanicsville, VA, our client is a US wide wholesale distributor with approximately 25 employees. The Controller is responsible for the finance, accounting, payroll, and vendor management functions. This hands-on, roll up your sleeves manager supervises two accounting employees and reports to the Chairman.
Summary of Job Responsibilities and Requirements
Provides leadership and supervision to the finance, accounting, payroll, human resources and vendor management functions through effective communication, coaching, training and development. Supervises two staff members.
Functional duties include, but not limited to:
Maintain accurate General Ledger.
Direct the account reconciliations.
Assures all journal entries are accurate and complete.
Assures all purchase orders are entered correctly.
Review the Daily Posting Report which includes all inventory movement, cash receipts, purchases and journal entries.
Cash flow/financial performance and forecasts.
Prepare the Daily Cash Report.
Prepare budget variance analysis.
Prepare timely and accurate financial statements.
Prepare and review various audit schedules.
Prepare audit materials and supervise year-end audit.
Federal and State tax returns.
Prepare property taxes.
Establish and monitor internal controls.
Supervise and review accounts payable process.
Supervise accounts receivables, credit and collections.
Review and approve payroll for approximately 25 employees; multi-state.
Manage the commission and bonus programs.
Administer profit sharing plan.
Facilitate benefit plan negotiations.
Manage the Human Resources function (e.g., employee records, policy, I-9 forms, benefit programs, insurance, unemployment, COBRA notices, 5500 forms, workers’ comp, etc.).
Works closely with information technology to verify the integrity of systems, controls, processes and data, and enhance the company's value.
Represents company in a professional manner to all customers, vendors, and internal personnel.
Promotes and adheres to the company’s mission, vision and values along with policies and applicable laws in a fair and equitable manner.
Other assigned duties or special projects, as needed.
General Work Environment
Work in an office environment using laptop, telephone, etc. at a desk.
Typical work hours Mon – Thurs 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM and Fri 7:30 AM – 1:00 PM; Full time, salaried exempt role.

Key Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related area.
Minimum 5 years of proven successful accounting / finance experience with a strong knowledge of general accounting practices in the above areas.
Some successful supervisory or team lead experience highly desirable.
Effective communication and change management skills.
Experience in whole sale distribution or manufacturing a plus; family owned and operated company experience a plus.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, accounting and reporting systems (e.g., VAI or another ERP system) and payroll (e.g., ADP).
Successfully pass pre-employment screening.
